I've been out on Fire Island for the last few weeks, earning a few extra dollars spinning records at a few choice parties (Thanks Ed's for connecting me with Ms. A. Cooper!), and there I was playing a killer 22 minute (not mb, min!) Arthur Russell Levan vinyl gem (still my prefered way to build my biceps), staring out at the sea and grinning with joy (ok, so maybe an e had passed my lips, but just a cheeky half of course) and ruminating on how great old school disco really is. (I hasten to add I'm also partial to the current 'cosmic' disco stuff being produced, but it's the campery of the strings, cow bells and pseudo-religious vocals that keep me coming back for the original shit.)
Anyway, so there I was, thinking that these Pines boys would be all over my 22 minute homage to endless grinding, but was rudely awakened by the host who informed me that it was 11:30 pm and time to wind down the party. YEAH, you read that right, PM! Apparently they had bicep yoga and 'roids at 7 am on the beach. What?
Rather saddened and also rather hightened, I wound down the mix and packed up my box of weights. As I shuffled through the meat-rack on my way back to my authento lesbo-fishing hut in The Grove (complete with Hansel and Gretel decor), it dawned on me that The Pines has become as disinfected as it's name suggests. It certainly doesn't represent the wonder, variation, love and happiness that can be seen throughout the delightful documentary When Ocean Meets Sky.
Oh well, I'm back in The Grove now, and the moon with his spoon is smiling down on me. So in salute to the decadent, no yoga 70s, to The Pines gone-by, to Cherry 'Blue Collar' Grove, and to the ass-end of summer I give you my East Village Roller Disco Mix.
See you in the rink boys! Love, Dick

This week's East Village Boy of the Week is Michael, from New York
Photographed for EVB by Paul Gunn
I shot this hotel room series in a simple room at the Hotel Chelsea early in the morning, armed with a hangover and no breakfast. Somehow I tend to become more inspired this way. I think Michael was eager to explore his sexuality in front of the camera, with mixed undertones of shyness and exhibitionism. These images translate almost as voyeuristic snapshots in a seedy motel, as Michael's attention is focused on mundane tasks like brushing his teeth or changing his clothes. It appealed to me to have the opportunity to be in his space and make a mini photo diary of this daily routine. I think there's something sexy in that. Like when you have a hot sleepover and you wake up to admire your mate sleeping or walking to the bathroom. But maybe that's just me. I'm intrigued and maybe aroused by the beauty and simplicity in everyday things. Too much. -Paul Gunn

East Village Boys is proud to announce the launch of our online gallery, where from time to time, we'll be offering artwork by some of the people we've featured on the site (and those we haven't yet) available exclusively through EVB. And to make things even better, we're proud to be launching it with two limited edition prints by Scooter LaForge - his first prints ever - "Pee Bear" and "Me Against Me".
